Serrano nets late equalizer; Men's Soccer draws #18 LMU

HARROGATE, Tenn. – A pair of first career goals keyed a valiant second-half effort from the Catawba College men's soccer team to force a 2-2 draw with 18th-ranked Lincoln Memorial on Saturday afternoon.

 

TEAM STATS

- Catawba (1-1-4, 0-0-2 SAC) held a 16-6 advantage in shots as its 10 on-goal attempts tied the squad's best mark

- The visitors also led in the corner kicks department with a 7-5 differential, outnumbering its opponent in shots and corners for the fifth time this year

- The Railsplitters (3-1-2, 0-1-1 SAC) were tabbed with fewer fouls, committing nine infractions against Catawba's 13. However, LMU accounted for seven of the 10 yellow cards issued in the match

- Both of LMU's shots on goal scored while eight of the Catawba Indians' shots were turned away by Railsplitter keeper Daniel Benedek Miklosi

 

INDIVIDUAL STATS

- For the first time in his 36-match Catawba career, Jaime Serrano supplied a goal to secure a point in league standings

- Freshman Garrett Alban collected his first career score on a lone shot

- Rodrigo Albayeros took the corner kick that found Serrano to chalk up his second career assist for the blue and white

- Mate Kenyeres led the offense with four shots including three on frame

- Zak Stiffler spent 86 minutes between the posts as Fletcher Harris played his first four collegiate minutes

- Peter Majer, who obtained his undergraduate degree from LMU, and Greg Chatzopoulos made their first starting lineup appearances as Catawba Indians

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half

- Salano Birch and Jacopo Suagher looked to obtain an early edge with third-minute deliveries but were turned away

- Botond Skulka notched the Railsplitters' first shot on goal off a pass from Colin Clark in the 15th minute, finding the back of the net to create a 1-0 LMU lead

- Two LMU corner kicks in the ensuing moments were broken up by the Catawba defense

- Late in the stanza, Stiffler absorbed contact from Gian-Carlo Kama while attempting a deep kick, spurring the issuance of a yellow card and substitution of Harris in net

- Kenyeres fired a 41st-minute free kick toward the net as Benedek Miklosi made the save, closing the half with the Railsplitters ahead by a score

 

Second Half

- Catawba came out of halftime in control, booting a pair of shots and earning five straight throw-ins

- In the 54th minute, Tino Lira lifted a cross into the box that LMU deflected away. However, Alban leapt at the second opportunity and headed the volley past Benedek Miklosi to even the score

- Corner kicks bookended a couple of Kenyeres shots that were denied as Catawba sought its first lead of the afternoon

- Ronan O'Mahony threaded a shot through a crowd of Catawba Indians that, with the help of a deflection, went into the net as LMU stood six minutes away from victory

- Culminating a three-minute flood of offense, Albayeros drove an 88th-minute corner to the doorstep where Serrano threw his shoulder into it to provide the equalizer

- With four seconds left on the clock, the Railsplitters received one last opportunity with a free kick just outside the box, but the Catawba defense pulled through to finalize the match at 2-2

The Catawba Indians return to friendly confines on Saturday, Sep. 28 for a meeting with Limestone. Kickoff at Frock Field is slated for 1 p.m.
