RALEIGH, N.C. – The Catawba Indians women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Shaw on Saturday afternoon to conclude its participation in the Shaw U Invitational.
TEAM STATS
- Shaw (2-0) hit .356 in the contest compared to Catawba's (1-2) .149 mark
- The Bears dropped in 10 aces while the visitors managed two from the service of Avery Fleshood and Sydney McCutcheon
- However, Catawba was more accurate on its serves with a percentage of .911, logging five errors against 11 from Shaw
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Devyn Berg led the Catawba Indians in kills with six, followed by Jordan Danielson's five. Sofia Beard – to tie her career high – and Katie Clark supplied four kills apiece
- McCutcheon recorded team-best totals of nine set assists and six digs
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
- The Shaw offense came out swinging with six consecutive points to open the set riding a 7-1 lead
- After trading sideouts for nearly a dozen points, Catawba crept back to 15-11 thanks to big spikes on the outside
- The set started to slip away from Catawba due to service and attack errors, but Shaw began to commit similar mistakes until the Bears regrouped to take the opener, 25-18
Second Set
- Catawba and Shaw were side by side at 5-5 until a small groove for the Bears pushed the hosts ahead
- Beard nipped their momentum with a pair of kills off assists by Haley Moffett and Kary Hales
- Shaw's Khamare Steppe and Amari Earl helped steer a 16-4 run to reach set point
- Natalie Rehm notched a kill to keep Catawba alive, but the Bears got the clinching point to finalize the stanza a 25-14 triumph
Third Set
- Catawba started on the right foot, opening the period with Clark and Danielson kills to lead 3-0 early
- The teams traded blows but the Catawba Indians remained in front, until a flurry of errors allowed Shaw to pull back ahead, 17-13
- Berg managed a kill to shrink the gap to 21-19, but another Bear scoring streak brought proceedings to match point
- Catawba benefitted from Shaw miscues and a successful attack from Beard
- Manuela Crispa Nasser assisted Steppe to wrap up the victory for Shaw

Catawba heads off to Jackson, Tenn. for a weekend tournament hosted by Union University. Action begins on Friday, Sep. 13 at 11 a.m. against Southwest Baptist.
