Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College women's basketball team flexed its defensive muscles in its 57-49 win over Newberry in Goodman Arena on Wednesday evening, forcing the Wolves to 34 percent shooting from the field and 27 turnovers in the win in South Atlantic Conference play.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Catawba shot 22-for-61 (36 percent) from the field, while Newberry was 18-of-53 (34 percent) from the floor
- The Wolves shot 5-for-22 (23 percent) from three-point range; the Catawba Indians were 2-of-18 (11 percent) from deep
- Catawba was 11-for-14 (79 percent) from the free throw line, while Newberry went 8-for-11 (73 percent) from the charity stripe
- The Wolves out-rebounded Catawba 39-37; Newberry's 14 offensive rebounds helped them to a slight 10-9 advantage in second-chance points
- The Wolves recorded 11 assists to 27 turnovers, while Catawba had nine assists to 21 turnovers; Catawba led 20-19 in points off turnovers
- Catawba led 40-24 in points in the paint; Newberry led 9-6 in fastbreak points and 19-8 in bench points
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Janiya Foskey posted a game-high 23 points and eight rebounds
- Mary Spry chipped in eight points and five boards
- Bailee Goodlett also had eight points with two steals
- Julie Janus recorded seven points with two three-pointers
- Natalie Fuertes Lara swiped a game-high five steals
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Janus canned a triple on the opening possession before Spry added a bucket as Catawba took an early 5-0 lead after just 49 seconds
- Newberry responded with the game's next nine points, keeping Catawba scoreless for over seven minutes
- Catawba scored two more baskets the rest of the period with the teams deadlocked in a 9-9 ballgame after a defensive opening quarter
SECOND QUARTER
- Another Janus three-pointer broke an 11-11 tie near the midway point
- The Wolves responded with four straight to gain the lead after a Jayla Cook layup
- Newberry held to a slight 19-18 lead after 20 minutes of action
THIRD QUARTER
- Back-to-back Foskey scores swung the lead in Catawba's favor, forcing an early Newberry timeout
- The lead grew to five after Goodlett's jumper near the midway point
- Newberry fought back to tie the game, but Catawba answered with a 6-0 run, ultimately taking a 36-32 lead into the final 10 minutes
FOURTH QUARTER
- Foskey added two more scores to start the fourth quarter, sparking an 8-0 Catawba run to open the fourth quarter and open up a 12-point lead over the Wolves
- The Wolves whittled their deficit down to seven points, but the clock started to become the issue, with just 2:49 remaining
- Foskey iced the game at the foul line in the closing seconds, capping her 15-point quarter to help push the Catawba Indians to victory
GAME NOTES
- Foskey's fourth 20-point game of the season (Catawba is 4-0 in such games)
- The senior has scored in double figures in each of the last five games
- Foskey's 12th game with eight or more rebounds; her 7.4 rebounds per game is good for top ten in the league
- Catawba sweeps the season series with Newberry
- With the result, Catawba moves into a tie for fourth place in the SAC standings
