MEADOWVIEW, Va. — The Catawba College men's soccer team seeks a return to the win column in South Atlantic Conference play with a road match against Emory & Henry on Sunday afternoon.
Tuesday Draw at Wingate
- Catawba battled to a 2-2 draw with Wingate at Pride Park on Tuesday to mark the Catawba Indians' second consecutive stalemate in a road match
- Lukas García Huidobro and Máté Kenyeres booted in game-tying goals, tallying back-to-back matches with a score for García Huidobro and snapping a five-match drought for Kenyeres
- Héctor Vara had numerous save chances between the posts in a career outing where the Spaniard amassed nine stops on 11 shots
- The draw kept Catawba at .500 overall (4-4-2) with just one loss in five away contests (2-1-2)
Kenyeres Still on Top
- Despite being tied for 85th nationwide, Kenyeres leads the low-scoring SAC with 12 total points; the next-highest scorer from the SAC is Carson-Newman's Mitchell Honcoop at 10
- The Budapest, Hungary, product also paces the conference with six goals after scoring five times in a three-match stretch early on, followed by his match-tying blast at Wingate
- Unsurprisingly, Kenyeres tops the conference in shots per tilt at 2.70 and is one of four Catawba Indians averaging at least one shot on goal per match
All-Time Series
- Catawba is a perfect 3-0 against Emory & Henry all-time, boasting a lopsided 18-1 goal differential
- Last season's meeting was the closest of the trio with a scoreless ledger at halftime, but the Catawba Indians used two second-half strikes to defend home turf
- The 2023 matchup was hosted by E&H at Fred Selfe Stadium, rather than the Food City Sports Complex – the current home of the Wasps – which opened last year
Scouting the Wasps
- Emory & Henry has undergone a full makeover as a program, bringing in head coach Ali Al-Gashamy and a wealth of talent after the closure of SAC juggernaut Limestone in the spring
- The Wasps, who were winless since their Division II transition in 2022, are 5-3-2 with an impressive 4-1-1 clip in conference play
- Following a rough 0-3 start, E&H is riding a three-match winning streak and has not been beaten since Sept. 14, which was a narrow 1-0 loss to fourth-ranked Anderson
- Freshmen Jean-Charles Eyidi and Noah Serwy lead the offense with three goals apiece, while Baptiste Berthozat has been the Wasps' primary keeper with a 1.00 goals-against average, .741 save percentage and a 5-0-2 record
