PREVIEW: Men's Soccer hosts Newberry on Senior Day

SALISBURY, N.C. — The Catawba College men's soccer program welcomes Newberry to Frock Field on Saturday while celebrating its six-man senior class.

Tuesday in Tigerville
- Despite the late Monday decision to move to a turf field, Catawba excelled regardless in a 5-0 rout of Bob Jones University earlier in the week
- Heavy rainfall in the Upstate region forced the Bruins to make North Greenville's Pepsi Stadium their home field for the day, allowing the Catawba Indians to get even on the pitch after being defeated by NGU in heartbreaking fashion to start the year
- Máté Kenyeres pocketed his third brace of the season with a pair of second-half goals, retaking the South Atlantic Conference scoring lead at eight
- Héctor Vara went 80 minutes in net to collect the win as Haruto Togashi made his collegiate debut, facing no shots in 10 minutes of relief

Senior Send-Off
- Prior to kickoff, six members of the Catawba men's soccer team will be honored for their contributions to the program
- Kenyeres, Kheynne Ona-Vera, Vito Venaría, Jaime Alpizar, Tomas Kelly and Daniel Christofi are to be recognized while being joined by their families and friends
- Ona-Vera is the longest-tenured Catawba Indian of the group, coming into the program as a true freshman in 2022 and enters Senior Day with 44 matches played in his career
- Venaría became a Catawba Indian in 2023 before Kenyeres and Kelly joined in 2024, then Alpizar and Christofi transferred in ahead of the 2025 season

The Home Stretch
- With two matches left on the docket, Catawba is at the bottom of the league standings but still in the hunt to claim a spot in the SAC Tournament
- The blue and white host Lenoir-Rhyne in the regular season finale on Wednesday, which leaves six points on the table
- Catawba most likely needs at least one win to remain eligible for postseason play
- MasseyRatings.com projects that Catawba will defeat Newberry and draw Lenoir-Rhyne, good for 10 points which would tie Mars Hill and put the Catawba Indians in the eighth seed

All-Time Series
- Catawba is 22-8-3 against the Wolves in their 33 prior meetings in a series that dates back to 1995
- The Catawba Indians won the programs' initial matchup at Frock Field by a sizable 13-0 margin that set Catawba's single-match goals record
- At home, Catawba is a dominant 12-4-2; however, the last nine meetings 4-3-2 in favor of the Wolves

Scouting the Wolves
- Newberry enters the contest with a winning record at 5-3-4, but has gone 1-3-4 in conference play
- The Wolves' last win was a 4-0 decision over BJU, one goal shy of Catawba's result against the Bruins, which preceded two losses and two draws in the last four outings
- No matter the venue, Newberry has been slightly above average with a .583 winning percentage both at home and on the road
- Three Wolves lead the offensive attack with three goals apiece while netminder Charlie Clark tops all SAC goalies in save percentage (.807) with 49 total stops
