Augusta, Ga. — The Catawba College women's basketball team survived a three-pointer at the buzzer to claim a come-from-behind 80-78 overtime win at Augusta on Wednesday in non-conference action.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Augusta shot 27-for-61 (44 percent) from the field; Catawba went 25-of-57 (44 percent) from the field
- The Catawba Indians were 8-for-23 (35 percent) from three-point range, while holding the Jaguars to 6-for-19 (32 percent) from long range
- Catawba shot 22-for-33 (67 percent) from the free throw line; AU was 18-of-30 (60 percent) from the charity stripe
- Augusta out-rebounded the Catawba Indians 47-27, but held just a slight 11-9 edge in second-chance points
- The Jaguars recorded 16 assists to 22 turnovers, while Catawba had 10 assists to 13 turnover; the Catawba Indians led 21-12 in points off turnovers
- Augusta led in points in the paint (28-24) and bench points (14-12); Catawba led 14-11 in fastbreak points
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Mary Spry led the way once again with 23 points; her third straight game with 20 or more
- Brooklin Ingram knocked down five three-pointers with 18 points
- Kairah Dixon-Booker chipped in 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting
- Bailee Goodlett was the fourth Catawba Indian in double figures with 12 points
- Sheree Gidney added six points and a team-high five boards
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Augusta scored the first six points of the game in the first two-plus minutes
- The Jags' lead grew to 10 near the midway point
- Spry and Goodlett buckets cut the deficit to six points
- AU's three-pointer at the end of the period had the hosts up 25-14 at the quarter break
SECOND QUARTER
- A Spry basket and an Ingram three-pointer quickly cut the Catawba deficit to six points in the opening minute
- Spry's free throw just after the media timeout made it just a 29-27 lead for Augusta
- The Jags led 42-38 heading into the halftime locker room
THIRD QUARTER
- Catawba took its first lead of the game at the 8:32 mark in the third quarter after Goodlett's layup, leading 45-44
- The Jaguars went on a 10-run to re-open up a nine-point lead with under six minutes to go in the third
- Makayla Stokes' free throw brought the difference back within five; Augusta led by six with 10 minutes to go
FOURTH QUARTER
- Catawba responded with a 7-0 run early in the fourth quarter; Imani Williams' free throws tied the game at 63
- A Saniya Wilson jumper and Dixon-Booker's layup pushed the Catawba lead to four points with three minutes left
- The Jaguars were fouled with 16 seconds left with Catawba up one; AU split the pair to force the game to OT
OVERTIME
- Goodlett's and-one jump-started Catawba's run of the first four points in the overtime period
- AU's Cierra McGinlay tied the game with a three-pointer with 2:26 left
- Dixon-Booker responded with a triple; Spry's jumper pushed the lead to four in the final minute
- Augusta hoisted a three-pointer in the final seconds, but it bounced out as Catawba finished out the win
