Women's Basketball rides strong third quarter to Senior Day win over UVA Wise

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College women's basketball team out-scored UVA Wise 27-10 in the third quarter and rolled from there, topping the Cavaliers on Senior Day in the regular season finale in South Atlantic Conference action for the final time inside Goodman Arena this season.

 

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba was 25-of-54 (46 percent) from the field, while UVA Wise went 22-for-58 (38 percent) from the floor

- The Catawba Indians shot 6-for-20 (30 percent) from three-point range; the Cavaliers were 6-for-22 (27 percent) from long range

- Catawba was 13-for-18 (72 percent) from the free throw line, while Wise was just 6-for-10 (60 percent) from the charity stripe

- The Catawba Indians out-rebounded UVA Wise 36-33, but the Cavaliers held the slim 6-5 advantage in second-chance points

- The Cavaliers recorded 18 assists to 29 turnovers, while Catawba had 12 assists to 24 turnovers; Wise held a slim 20-18 edge in points off turnovers

- Catawba led in points in the paint (30-28) and bench points (27-12), but UVA Wise held a 10-7 edge in fastbreak points

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Senior Janiya Foskey scored a team-high 23 points on 7-for-10 shooting with six rebounds

- Senior Nala Baker chipped in 11 points

- Senior Jada Porter added 11 points in 21 minutes off the bench with three three-pointers

- Senior Natalie Fuertes Lara racked up a team-high six steals, while senior Abi Svenson converted a pair of free throws at the line

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST QUARTER

- Sable Burnside's layup put UVA Wise up 13-6 in the early going

- The Cavaliers led 18-7 at the 2:15 mark in the first quarter

- Catawba chipped the deficit to 21-13 after the opening 10 minutes

 

SECOND QUARTER

- Catawba got to within five points of the lead in the first three minutes into the second

- Bailee Goodlett's jumper with eight second left tied the game at 28 heading into the halftime locker room

 

THIRD QUARTER

- Baker and Porter three-pointers bookended an 8-0 run for Catawba to start the second half, extending the run to 14-0 from the end of the first half

- Two more Porter triples helped ignite a separate 10- Catawba run to push the lead to 16 points by the 3:27 mark

- The Catawba Indians led 55-38 entering the final period

 

FOURTH QUARTER

- UVA Wise chipped Catawba's lead down to 13 points, but not until under the three-minute mark to go in the game and Catawba never let the lead dip below double digits, cruising to one final win in Goodman Arena this season

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba earned the 5-seed in next week's SAC Tournament; they'll face 4th-seeded Wingate on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the Rock Hill (S.C.) Event Center
