#9 Baseball earns 13th straight SAC series win with split vs Coker

Salisbury, N.C. —- The 9th-ranked Catawba College baseball team earned its 13th consecutive series win in South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday with a second straight shutout of Coker before falling in the try for a sweep at Newman Park.

 

GAME ONE | Catawba 9, Coker 0

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Coker 13-6

- The Catawba Indians recorded seven of eight extra-base hits

- Both teams committed an error

- Catawba left six runners on base; Coker stranded nine

- The Cobras recorded the lone stolen base

- Catawba pitchers threw nine shutout innings on six hits and five walks, striking out five; Coker's staff 

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Payne Stolsworth threw eight shutout innings, allowing just six hits and four walks with three strikeouts

- Seth Sharpe covered the ninth, fanning two

- Nathan Chrismon was 3-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored

- Parker Styborski went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored

- Cooper Bryson drove in two RBI; James Dunlap added a pair of hits

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

SECOND INNING

- Dunlap tripled down the right field to lead off the second

- Hales drove him in on a sac fly to left

 

THIRD INNING

- Styborski came through with a two-out, two-RBI double to left field

- Ty Hubbard ripped an infield single and scored another

- Chrismon added another run on an RBI single to center field

 

SIXTH INNING

- A sac bunt moved Catawba runners to second and third with one out in the sixth

- Chrismon's two-RBI double extended the Catawba lead to 7-0

- Bryson sent a two-RBI double to right center to push it to 9-0

- The Cobras recorded two of three extra-base hits

- The Catawba Indians had the lone error in the contest

THIRD INNING

- Coker's Jaylen Mack opened the scoring in the third with a two-RBI double to left center

- The Cobras followed with an RBI single up the middle

- A third RBI base hit put Coker up 4-0

- Hubbard doubled to lead off the third and scored on a bases-loaded walk

 

FOURTH INNING

- Catawba intentionally walked Mack in the fourth to load the bases with one out

- An RBI fielder's choice gave Coker an insurance run to lead 5-1

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba returns to Newman Park on Tuesday, hosting UNC Pembroke in midweek action at 3 p.m.
