#12 Men's Tennis storms back to earn epic SAC Tournament title over #10 Wingate

Sumter, S.C. —- The 12th-ranked Catawba College men's tennis team trailed 3-1 in the South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Championship match at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C., but won the final three singles matches to storm back and claim its first tournament title since 2001.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

DOUBLES

- Thomas Kostka and Marcos Castares won 6-1 at the #2 doubles match, but Wingate would go on to take the doubles point

 

SINGLES

- Agustin Mastri cruised to take a 6-1, 6-0 victory over the top-ranked Wingate singles opponent

- Luca Bergonzi bounced back from a 7-5 loss in the opening set to take the final two, 6-4, 6-4 to take the match at #4 singles

- Mateo Berne followed suit with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory at #3s

- Kostka clinched the match with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory at #2s

- The SAC Freshman of the Year Koskta took home SAC Tournament MVP honors, helping lead the Catawba Indians to its second SAC Tournament title in program history and its first since 2001
