SALISBURY, N.C. — The Catawba College men's lacrosse team presented an optimistic upset bid early on that fizzled away in an 8-1 third quarter, resulting in a 17-7 defeat to ninth-ranked Wingate on Wednesday night.
TEAM STATS
- The Catawba Indians (8-3, 4-3 SAC) stacked up 23 shots with 12 on goal, while Wingate (9-2, 4-2 SAC) poured in 64 attempts but only 29 were on target
- The turnover count favored Catawba 4-1 in the first quarter, but the Bulldogs ramped up their pressure on defense to win the battle 20-14
- The 'Dogs enjoyed a perfect 24-for-24 night on the clear and held Catawba to 17 successful clears on 24 attempts
- Cael Petroff won nine faceoffs as Dylan Cienfuegos claimed one for Catawba; Logan Spaeth and Dylan Rupprecht combined for 17 wins, helping WU go .630 on the spot
- Ben LoPiccolo logged 12 saves, many on the doorstep, while Quad Williams notched five saves for the 'Dogs to get the victory
INDIVIDUAL STATS
- Frank Cetrone and Jordan Dash braced with two goals apiece, both attackers scoring on each of their shots on goal
- Also recording two-point affairs were Peyton Turner and Tanner Stout with one goal and one assist each
- Jack Mercer found paydirt once for Catawba as Jackson Braswell rounded out the point-scorers with an assist
- LoPiccolo and Petroff shared the team lead in ground balls at six
- Ben Butterfield and Owen Conway both collected two caused turnovers as Butterfield paced all field players with three ground balls
