Football stifles Newberry on road, earns best start since 2017

Newberry, S.C. —- The Catawba College football team never trailed en route to a key road win over Newberry in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday night, 21-10, for its first win over the Wolves since 2017.

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-gained Newberry 376-314

- The Catawba Indians totaled 197 rush yards to the Wolves' 112

- The Wolves edged Catawba through the air, 202-179

- Catawba totaled 22 first downs to 19 first downs for Newberry

- The Wolves held a slight lead in time of possession, 30:29 to 29:31

- The Catawba Indians were 4-of-9 on third down while holding Newberry to 3-for-10 on third down

- Catawba converted both of its fourth down attempts; Newberry was 1-for-3 on fourth down

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Bennett Galloway took 16 carries for 147 yards and three touchdowns

- Kevin Lalin chipped in 58 yards on the ground on just 10 carries

- Preston Brown was 17-for-25 for 179 passing yards and no turnovers

- Jalen Brown led the team in receiving with 36 yards and three catches; RJ Jackson hauled in a team-best four catches

- Jaylen Hinton recorded a team-leading six tackles

- Jy Favor, Gavin Moore and Ali Abdul-Barr each picked up a tackle for loss

- Nigel Gay totaled three pass breakups

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST QUARTER

- Catawba won the toss and received, and marched 79 yards in 11 plays, including a fourth-down conversion, finishing off the opening drive with a 10-yard Galloway touchdown

- The Wolves drove the ball in Catawba territory, but was stuck in no-man's land on fourth down and Favor broke up their try for a first down to hand the ball back over to the Catawba defense

SECOND QUARTER

- After a Catawba punt, Newberry's Keith Desaussure ran for a 23-yard touchdown; the PAT tied the game at 7 early in the second quarter

- A 26-yard completion to Nathan Carr on a 3rd & 13 helped extend the ensuing Catawba drive, which was another 11-play drive that took over six and a half minutes off the clock

- Galloway's eight-yard TD scamper returned the lead to Catawba, 14-7

- After Newberry converted a fourth down near field, the Catawba Indian defense stood tall just before the end of the first half, holding the seven-point advantage

THIRD QUARTER

- Both teams punted in their first possession of the second half

- Newberry faced a 1st & 40, but a Catawba penalty on 2nd & 35 gave the Wolves a fresh set of downs; the Wolves would punt later on in the drive

FOURTH QUARTER

- Newberry drove the ball in the Catawba red zone early in the fourth quarter, but settled for a 31-yard field goal to cut the Wolves' deficit to 14-10

- A 41-yard return on the kickoff from Mike Geter set up the Catawba Indians near midfield on the following drive

- On 3rd & 6, Brown found Bo Pryor deep for a 31-yard gain to break into the Newberry red zone

- On the doorstep, a fumble sent the Catawba Indians backward; Galloway plunged into the end zone on a 4th & goal from the two-yard line for the game-sealing score with 8:15 to go

- A 41-yard catch and run brought the Wolves to striking distance; Newberry would later have 1st & goal at the 10-yard line

- The Catawba defense held tall on four straight rushes inside their 10-yard line to turn the Wolves over on downs with three and a half minutes remaining

- Galloway singlehandedly rushed for 70 yards on the game-clinching drive, running out the clock on the Catawba victory

GAME NOTES

- Catawba's first win over Newberry since 2017

- Best four-game start (3-1) since 2017

- First time over .500 in SAC play in eight seasons

- Galloway is tied atop the SAC lead with six rushing touchdowns this season

- Gay lead the conference with six pass breakups this season

- Catawba takes a break from league action next week, hosting Southern Connecticut State on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. at Shuford Stadium
