Salisbury, N.C. — The Catawba College women's basketball team responded from its loss on Wednesday with a wire-to-wire South Atlantic Conference victory over UVA Wise in Goodman Arena on Saturday afternoon.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Catawba shot 26-for-58 (45 percent) from the field while holding UVA Wise to 17-of-55 (31 percent) from the floor
- The Catawba Indians went 7-for-25 (28 percent) from three-point range; the Cavaliers were 3-for-16 (19 percent) from long range
- Wise was 17-for-23 (74 percent) from the free throw line while Catawba shot 10-for-14 (71 percent) at the charity stripe
- Catawba out-rebounded UVA Wise 42-33, but the Cavs held a slight 11-10 edge in second-chance points with 12 offensive rebounds
- The Catawba Indians recorded 11 assists to 21 turnovers, while UVA Wise had 10 assists to 21 turnovers; Catawba led 20-11 in points off turnovers
- Catawba led in points in the paint (30-20), fastbreak points (10-6) and bench points (23-17)
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Makayla Stokes scored a team-high 11 points with seven rebounds
- Saniya Wilson added 10 points, five boards and four steals
- Sheree Gidney chipped in 10 points with another five rebounds
- Brooklin Ingram added 10 points with a pair of triples
- Kairah Dixon-Booker logged nine points on 4-of-6 shooting
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Triples from Dixon-Booker and Stokes got Catawba out to a 6-0 early lead
- UVA Wise battled back to tie the game at 8 at the 4:35 mark
- Julie Janus canned a triple to push the Catawba advantage up to 16-12 with 90 seconds left to play in the quarter
- A pair of Cavs free throws cut their deficit to 16-14 at the quarter break
SECOND QUARTER
- Catawba opened the second quarter with a 12-0 run to open up a 14-point lead after Gidney's layup at the 7:23 mark
- The Cavs got the deficit down to 10, but Catawba responded with the next seven points, reaching a 17-point edge with two and a half minutes to go in the half
- Wise scored the final five points of the half, trailing 35-23 at the half
THIRD QUARTER
- Catawba once again started a quarter strong, scoring the first six points of the second half to lead 41-23 in the first two minutes
- The teams traded baskets until UVA Wise made a run to cut the deficit 14 points with 10 minutes to go
FOURTH QUARTER
- Catawba opened up the fourth with another run, this time 7-0 to a game-high 21-point lead at the 7:25 mark
- UVA Wise got the deficit down to 14 points, but with only a minute remaining, as Catawba pulled away with the victory
