Softball makes statement in sweep at Wingate

Wingate, N.C. —- The Catawba College softball team handed Wingate its first winless doubleheader at home in South Atlantic Conference play since 2018 when it took both games in Union County on Wednesday.

GAME ONE | Catawba 5, Wingate 1

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Wingate 10-7

- The Bulldogs recorded two of three extra-base hits

- Wingate committed the lone error in the game

- Catawba recorded all four stolen bases in the game

- The Catawba Indian starter allowed one run on seven hits and two walks, striking out three; Wingate's staff allowed four earned runs on 10 hits, striking out five

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Alex Baquie went the distance, allowing just one run in seven innings of work

- Grace Flynn singled and drove home two

- Brianna Gallagher doubled on two hits and scored

- Michaela Hartman picked up two hits and drove in a run

HOW IT HAPPENED

SECOND INNING

- A two-out RBI double got the scoring started for Wingate in the second

FOURTH INNING

- Lainey Ruscoe singled and was moved to second on a bunt to lead off the fourth

- Abbey Nixon singled and moved up to second on the throw home

- Flynn drove home both on a two-out single the opposite way

FIFTH INNING

- Gallagher doubled to lead off the fifth

- Adda Prescott brought her home with a single up the middle

- Hartman followed later with an RBI single up the middle to make it 4-1

- Nixon's sac fly pushed Catawba's lead to 5-1

GAME TWO | Catawba 4, Wingate 3 - 8 innings

TEAM STATISTICS

- Wingate out-hit Catawba 12-7

- Catawba had the lone homer; the Bulldogs had four of seven extra-base hits

- Wingate committed the lone error of the game

- Both teams had a stolen bae

- Catawba's pitchers allowed two runs on 12 hits and two walks, striking out two; Wingate's staff allowed three earned runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out seven

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Dakotah Wilkins was good in the start, throwing 3.2 innings, allowing one run with two strikeouts

- Kate Holland earned the win in relief, allowing one earned run in 4.1 innings of work

- Gallagher homered and drove in two

- Hartman was 2-for-4 with an RBI

HOW IT HAPPENED

FOURTH INNING

- Maddy Altiers doubled to left-center with one out in the fourth

- Hartman scored her on an RBI single for the game's first run

- Jamie Horodecki's RBI double tied the game at 1 in the bottom half

FIFTH INNING

- Lily Huneycutt's infield RBI single gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead in the fifth

SEVENTH INNING

- A single and a walk put the tying run in scoring position for Catawba in the seventh

- With two outs, Bella Boykin drove in the game-tying run on a single up the middle

EIGHTH INNING

- With the inherited runner on second, Gallagher hit the go-ahead, two-run homer with one out, giving Catawba the 4-2 lead

- Wingate moved its runner over and scored on a fielder's choice, leaving the tying run on first base

- The Bulldogs hit an infield single to third base, but Prescott threw out the runner trying to advance to third for the game-winning play in the field
