Jefferson City, Tenn. — The third-ranked Catawba College baseball team overcame an early four-run deficit and won in the tenth inning in their series opener at Carson-Newman on Friday.

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Matthew Connolly had two hits, including a key three-run homer
- Sam Hunter was 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored
- Ty Hubbard added two hits including a double; Jake Dunlap tallied three hits
- Seth Sharpe earned the win, tossing three innings with one run allowed on two hits, striking out two
- Joe Burleyson matched the SAC lead with his fifth save of the season, closing the door in four batters
HOW IT HAPPENED
SECOND INNING
- A leadoff double followed by a single put runners on the corners with nobody out for the Eagles in the second
- Ryan Bolton's RBI single gave Carson-Newman the early lead
- Braxton Smith's RBI sac fly put the Eagles ahead 2-0
THIRD INNING
- Two singles and a double steal allowed Aiden Gibson to come through with a two-out, two-run single to put the Eagles in front 4-0
FIFTH INNING
- Hunter's two-out infield single scored Hubbard to get Catawba on the board in the fifth
SEVENTH INNING
- Brandon Crabtree doubled with one out in the seventh; Hunter traded places with him with a run-producing double of his own to cut the deficit to 4-2
- Atkins singled before Connolly launched his fifth homer of the season to take the lead 5-4
EIGHTH INNING
- Sebastian Rodriguez doubled to lead off the eighth for Carson-Newman
- Aiden Gibson drove in the tying run on a single to center field
TENTTH INNING
- Hubbard flipped a double the other way to lead off the tenth
- Two intentional walks moved the go-ahead run up to third base; Hubbard scored on a wild pitch before a second runner was thrown out
- Carson-Newman got a two-out single in the bottom half, but Burleyson produced the final out for Catawba's 15th win of the year
