MEADOWVIEW, Va. — The Catawba College women's lacrosse team went 2-for-2 against Virginian foes this week, capped by a mighty 15-1 win at Emory & Henry on Saturday at the Food City Sports Complex.
TEAM STATS
- Catawba (6-8, 2-5 SAC) delivered 31 shots including 27 on target while holding its opponent to a single-digit total for the first time as Emory & Henry (4-11, 1-7 SAC) got off just nine shots with five on goal
- The Catawba Indians decisively won the turnover battle as the Wasps committed double the miscues at 34-17
- Each side embarked on 28 transition opportunities with Catawba being far more efficient, notching 23 clears (.821) against E&H's 15 (.536)
- The blue and white nabbed 37 ground balls, setting a 27-game high, while the Wasps picked up 30 loose balls
- The draw margin wound up being relatively close at 9-7 favoring Catawba; the visitors held an 8-3 edge at halftime before E&H retorted with a 4-1 second half
- Ava Kunza took the decision, facing a lone shot in the opening 30 minutes as Ashlea Nieland stopped all four Wasp deliveries in the second half; Ella James and Madison Weaver each spent a half in the crease for the Wasps, combining for 12 saves
INDIVIDUAL STATS
- Ava Stanza led the scoring with a career-high four goals and one assist while picking up a trio of ground balls
- Mary Sorvillo and Kylie Harris each registered hat tricks with three goals and one assist apiece
- Sarah Maier found paydirt twice as she, Sorvillo, and Audrey Adelsberger paced the squad in ground ball pickups at four each
- Abby Shuren racked up four points on a goal and three assists, matching her career best in the helper category
- Freshman Aurora Hornbuckle posted a career day with two caused turnovers and three ground ball pickups as Maddie Fox shared the same stat line
- Adelsberger and Aly De La Noval also caused a pair of turnovers, rounding out a four-player group with multiple takeaways
- Leading in draw controls were Sorvillo and Skylar Mullin at three apiece, followed by Allison Filosa's two
