Softball closes out regular season with sweep at Coker

Hartsville, S.C. —- The Catawba College softball team closed out the regular season with a sweep over South Atlantic Conference foe Coker on Saturday to grab the sixth seed in the upcoming SAC Tournament.

GAME ONE | Catawba 13, Coker 5 - 5 innings

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Coker 15-6

- The Catawba Indians hit the lone homer and have four of six extra-base hits

- Both teams committed three errors

- The Cobras left five runners on base; Catawba stranded eight

- The Catawba Indians recorded all five stolen bases

- Catawba's starter threw five innings with no earned runs, allowing six hits and two walks, striking out three; Coker's staff allowed nine earned runs on 15 hits and six walks, striking out five

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Grace Flynn was 4-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored

- Lainey Ruscoe added a pair of hits with three RBI and a run scored

- Brianna Gallagher singled, drove in two and scored

- Jordan McCorkle doubled, drove in two and scored

- Alex Baquie threw the complete five innings with no earned runs along with her first career base hit

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Gallagher started the scoring with a two-run single up the middle

- The Catawba Indians loaded the bases to set up Ruscoe's two-run single to go up 4-0

- Flynn followed with an RBI single in her second at-bat of the frame to lead 5-0

SECOND INNING

- Ruscoe's two-out RBI single kept the scoring for Catawba going in the second to take a 6-0 lead

- McCorkle's two-run double pushed the lead to 8-0

- A throwing error allowed Catawba's ninth run to cross before Flynn launched a two-run homer to lead 11-0 after two innings

FOURTH INNING

- A bases-loaded walk from Rachel Pressley and an RBI fielder's choice made it 13-0, Catawba

- Coker scored four in the bottom half to cut the deficit back to single digits

FIFTH INNING

- The Cobras scratched across another run in the fifth on an error in the field

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Flynn singled and stole second in the top of the first

- Gallagher drove in the game's first run once again on a single up the middle

- Altiers' sac fly and Hartman's RBI single made it 3-0 Catawba after the first inning

FIFTH INNING

- Monroe was hit by a pitch and stole second to lead off the fifth

- Gallagher's RBI single up the middle to lead 4-0

- Hartman followed with another RBI base knock to lead 5-0

SIXTH INNING

- Catawba loaded the bases with one out in the sixth

- Altiers drove in two on a single through the left side

- Hartman sent home another run to go up 8-0

- Coker scored two on separate RBI base hits in the bottom half to cut the deficit to six runs

- Hannah Welsh's two-run double cut the deficit to 8-4

SEVENTH INNING

- Adda Prescott led off the seventh with a double 

- Wilkins drove her in with an RBI single for the final score of the ballgame

UP NEXT

- Catawba earns the 6-seed in next week's SAC Tournament opening series; they'll travel to 3-seed Carson-Newman with game one on Saturday
