Softball comes up short in opening game of SAC Tourney

Jefferson City, Tenn. —- The Catawba College softball team suffered a hard-fought loss in the opening game of the South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament on Saturday, falling to third-seed Carson-Newman, 2-1.

TEAM STATISTICS

- Carson-Newman out-hit Catawba 5-2

- The Catawba Indians committed the two errors in the game

- Catawba left three runners on base; C-N stranded seven

- Carson-Newman recorded the lone stolen base of the afternoon

- The Eagles' starter allowed a run on two hits and one walk, striking out seven; Catawba's starter allowed one earned run on five hits and three walks, striking out two

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- After a walk and a sac bunt, Carson-Newman's Macauley Bailey drove in the game's first run on a single down the right field line

SECOND INNING

- With runners on the corners and two out, the Eagles scored on a failed pickoff attempt to lead 2-0

SIXTH INNING

- Wilkins singled to right field and advanced to second on a hit-by-pitch

- Gallagher's two-out single up the middle scored Catawba's first run of the game

UP NEXT

- Catawba returns to the diamond on Sunday, needing two wins to extend their season; game one is set for 1 p.m.
