SALISBURY, N.C. — Dominance on the draw leading to ample offense helped the Catawba College women's lacrosse team brush past non-conference foe Virginia State, 13-7, on Wednesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.
TEAM STATS
- Catawba (5-8) recorded its fourth 30-shot game of the year, ripping 32 attempts – 23 of which were on goal – while limiting Virginia State (3-8) to 21 deliveries including 15 on target
- The blue and white commanded a 21-17 advantage in ground balls
- Unforced turnovers pained each side as Catawba committed two more miscues than the Trojans at 21-19, although the caused turnover count stood at an 11-11 stalemate
- The Catawba Indians landed one draw control shy of their season high, dominating at midfield to the tune of a 16-5 rout
- Each squad registered seven failed clears with the efficiency nod narrowly going to VSU at .632-.611
- Ashlea Nieland guarded the Catawba net in the opening half to get the decision before Ava Kunza made six saves on nine shots in relief; VSU's Ilyana Jones went the distance with 10 saves
INDIVIDUAL STATS
- Abby Shuren netted a career-high six goals, the most by a Catawba Indian since 2019, to tie the fifth-best mark in program history
- Mary Sorvillo and Madison Widecki engaged in hat trickery with three goals apiece
- Maddie Fox tossed in one goal with an assist as Skylar Mullin rounded out the scoresheet with one helper; Catawba's 11 unassisted goals is the most since the season opener
- Ava Stanza corralled a team-best four ground balls, leading Widecki and Shuren who added three each
- Widecki tallied four caused turnovers for the second straight contest as Audrey Adelsberger chalked up two
- Mullin pocketed five draw controls followed by Sorvillo's four, Allison Filosa's three and Fox's two
