SALISBURY, N.C. -- Lenoir-Rhyne rebounded after dropping the opening set to top host Catawba in four in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Bears improve to 10-3 overall and 8-1 in the SAC, winning by the scores of 22-25, 25-21, 25-14 and 25-16. The Catawba Indians move to 8-7 and 5-4.
Allison Bryant posted 17 kills, 10 digs and served three aces for Catawba, while Kylie Morgan had 10 kills and 12 digs. Ashley Johnson registered six blocks with libero Gabrielle Kuzma collecting 14 digs.
Bryant had eight of her kills in the opening set for the Lady Indians, hitting at 58%. The tight set was tied 10 times, the last at 21-all following a kill from Bryant. Johnson served an ace to put Catawba ahead and after a kill from Morgan, Catawba led 23-21. Colette Romp pulled LR within a point before Bryant killed off the final two points.
The Bears jumped out 5-1 in set two and 8-1 one set three to go on top two sets to one. Catawba had rallied in set two and closed within 23-21 after an ace by Morgan. The Lady Indians nearly had the next point, but a nice defensive effort by LR led to a Catawba error which was followed by a kill from Taylor Prall to end the set.
Catawba stayed close early in set four. Tied at 11-all, LR edged ahead with a 3-0 run. Bryant pulled Catawba within 16-14, but the Bears scored three straight, capped by a block and kill from Anna Beaver to lead 19-14.
Prall led LR with 13 kills and 24 digs, followed by Romp with a dozen. Braelyn Faust posted six blocks and Alannah Thomas added five.
Catawba is at home on Saturday, hosting Mars Hill at 5 p.m.
