SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba knocked off NCAA II fourth-ranked Coker 2-1 in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Frock Soccer Complex. The win ups the Catawba Indians' record to 5-2-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the SAC. The Cobras fall to 7-2 and 2-2.
With the match tied at 1-1, Catawba notched the game-winner in the 71st minute. Alejo Bzurovski drove into the box and sent a ball back to the middle of the box from the end line. Tom Savigar collected then fired a shot that Coker keeper Jasper Rump got a hand on, but could not keep out of the net.
Catawba had struck first in the 11th minute. Nico Morillo send a cross though the box that Lewis Moore redirected into the goal. Coker equalized in the 52nd minute as Gustavo Palmieri took a shot from a tight angle that bounced under the crossbar.
Coker held a 21-10 edge in shot and had a 10-2 advantage in corners. Rump had one save for Coker. Gianluca Tommasi had two saves playing the first half for Catawba. Zak Stiffler played the final half and recorded three saves.
The win marked the first for Catawba against a ranked team since topping #7 Tusculum in 2016. It is also the highest ranked team that Catawba has ever posted a win against during the NCAA II era.
Catawba travels to Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday to face the Bears at 5 p.m.
