SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba was denied a fifth straight win to open the season and settled for a 4-4 tie with visiting Converse in men's soccer action on Wednesday night at the Frock Soccer Complex. The Catawba Indians move to 4-0-1, while the Valkyries go to 2-1-1.
The teams combined for eight goals in about a 30-minute span from the 30th minute to the 63rd as the teams combined for 44 shots and 15 corners.
Converse broke the ice on a goal from Hayden Gensler. Catawba equalized three minutes later as Salano Birch headed home a corner kick by Joseph Allerton. The Valkyries went back on top with a penalty kick from Gero Walters a minute after the equalizer. The Indians pulled even again as Birch touched a pass by the keeper and scored in an empty net in the 38th minute.
Catawba got two goals from Nico Morillo to go up 4-2 in the second. His first goal came in the 47th minute and the second in the 56th. Both goals came on assists by Simone Trentin.
Converse wasn't done and got the tying goals in a three minute span around the hour mark. Gensler scored his second on the hour and got loose on a long ball by Tobias Bruecher in the 62nd to knot the match at 4-4.
The teams continued to press, but were unable to produce a winner. Gianluca Tommasi made eight saves for Catawba with David Windmiller stopping four shots in goal for Converse.
Catawba starts up conference play on Saturday, hosting Anderson at 8 p.m.
