SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba men's soccer team jumped back into the win column on Saturday night at the Frock Soccer Complex, knocking off 14th-ranked Mars Hill 2-1 in South Atlantic Conference action. The Catawba Indians go to 7-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the SAC, with the Lions dropping to 5-3-2 and 2-2-1.
All the scoring came in the opening 45 minutes. Catawba notched the first goal in the seventh minute. Jacopo Suagher sent a ball through the box from the right that was flicked to Sebastia Cerda-Tous at the back post from Joe Bennett. Cerda-Tous sent a shot high to the right of the Lion keeper for the lead.
Catawba doubled the lead in the 33rd minute. Alejo Bzurovski send a long ball from the back that Bautista Vecchi-Ramello was able to get to just in front of rushing Lion keeper Brennan Whalen. Vecchi-Ramello was able to push the ball past Whalen and tucked it into an empty net.
Mars Hill cut the lead in half about eight minutes later. Peter Plougmand drilled home a shot from the middle of the box after passes from Chase Jordan and Jorge Perez Prada.
Each team fired four shot in the final half, but only one each on goal. Zak Stiffler picked up three saves in goal for Catawba, while Whalen stopped five shots for the Lions.
Catawba hits the road for action next Saturday, traveling to Lincoln Memorial for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
