FROCK SOCCER COMPLEX, SALISBURY, N.C. – The No. 9 ranked Catawba Women's Soccer team stretched their unbeaten start to the season to 12 games as they put together a dominant performance against the visiting Mars Hill Lions on Saturday night in Salisbury. Donning pink numbers on their white home jerseys for the month of October, the Lady Indians waited until just past the hour mark to break the deadlock and never looked back from there.
Catawba (11-0-1) was in control for the entire game, with the ball at their feet for 70% of the contest, but they were continuously stifled by a Mars Hill (3-5-1) side that utilized a very defensive game plan to try and thwart Catawba going forward. It worked in the first half as both teams headed to the break locked at 0-0.
Catawba came close during an intense several minutes at the end of the first half, with Kasey Hahn hitting the bar and Hannah Dunn forcing an outstanding save by Mars Hill goalkeeper Camryn Miller, who redirected a header once again onto the woodwork. Ayden Vaughan and Katie Beck forced Miller into action shortly after, with a Beck effort drawing a particularly impressive save from the Lions keeper.
Miller finished the day with 10 saves while Sierra Davis was not called into action once for Catawba. It marked Catawba's 9th shutout of the year, all coming consecutively in an impressive feat of defensive effort. Catawba kept the pressure on after coming out of the half, with Kelly Havens and Katie Beck sending another pair of efforts off the woodwork as Catawba hit the frame of the goal for the fourth and fifth times in the game.
Those chances were signs of what was to come, as the shots and corners piled up for Catawba. Eventually, the Lady Indians found paydirt in the 61st minute as a Morgan Cartee's corner found the head of Karen Juarez, who was able to ghost her way through a crowd to nod the shot home.
Not satisfied, Catawba kept their foot on the gas and looked to put the game away. They did via another corner just 10 minutes after the opener as this time, Kasey Hahn found an unmarked Kelly Havens, who made no mistake from close range.
Catawba finished game outshooting Mars Hill 24-1, and their 16 corner kicks proved decisive by creating their pair of goals. Kasey Hahn led Catawba with five shots, while Hannah Dunn followed closely with four.
Catawba will be in action again at Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, October 8.
