SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba College baseball team led 3-2 heading into the eighthing inning, but Lenoir-Rhyne capitalized with three runs in the eighth for the come-from-behind win at Newman Park Wednesday afternoon. The Bears improve to 7-3 overall, while the Catawba Indians drop to 4-3 on the year.
Drew Robertson provided all of Catawba's run support in the game, blasting a three-run home run to center field in the fourth inning to take the lead. Robertson's homer was the only extra-base hit of the game for the Catawba Indians.
Blake Bean got the scoring started early for LR, hitting a leadoff home run in the top of the first inning before doing it again to start the third, as LR took a 2-0 lead a third of the way through.
Aaron Williams hit a one-out single in the fourth, which was followed by Harris Jackson getting hit by a pitch. Robertson put Catawba on top with the three-run blast, but the Bears scored three runs on three hits in the eighth to walk away with the win.
Gavin Marley gets the win for LR and Braden Houston earned the save in two hitless innings to close out a Catawba comeback attempt. Ryan Street had a solid outing for Catawba, tossing 6.1 innings, giving up two runs and striking out five in the no-decision.
Catawba returns to Newman Park this weekend, hosting Mars Hill for a three-game series. Game one on Friday is set for a 6 p.m. start.
