Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College baseball team was unable to complete the sweep over Tusculum on Sunday at Newman Park, as the Pioneers earned a 5-1 victory in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. Tusculum improves to 24-20 overall and 10-11 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians drop to 25-19 overall and 14-6 in conference action.
Dylan Driver doubled and drove in a run. Reece Crump doubled and scored the run. Tyler Ranel homered for the third time this weekend for the Pioneers.
Ranel's two-run homer opened the scoring in the top of the third for Tusculum, who then extended their lead to 3-0 on the very next batter when Zane Keener followed up with a solo homer of his own.
After a leadoff double from Crump, he later scored on a Driver sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, but its the only run Catawba would produce on the day.
Tusculum's Christian Ortega homered in the sixth and Will Samuelson hit an RBI double in the eighth to cap the scoring.
TU's Jacob Willett earned the win, pitching 4.2 hitless innings while striking out three. Mason Gwyn took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out six in 5.1 innings of work.
Catawba returns to Newman Park on Wednesday, hosting UNC Pembroke for a 6 p.m. start.
