Baseball falls short in back-and-forth rubber match at Tusculum

Greenville, Tenn. —- The Catawba College baseball team had the tying run in scoring position in the top of the ninth inning, but could not score it, falling 6-4 in the rubber match of the series at Tusculum on Monday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference baseball action.

 

TEAM STATS

- Tusculum out-hit Catawba 13-8

- The Catawba Indians had four of six extra-base hits in the contest

- Catawba committed two of three errors in the field

- The Catawba Indians recorded all three steals in the game

- Tusculum's pitchers allowed three earned runs in eight hits and four walks, striking out eight; Catawba's staff allowed five earned runs on 13 hits and eight walks, striking out six and stranding 16

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Levi Perrell went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and three RBI

- Sam Hunter hit two triples and scored a run

- Ty Hubbard singled and scored two runs

- Bo Rusher connected on an RBI double

- Hayden Simmerson went four-plus innings in the start, allowing two earned runs in six hits =, striking out three

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Hunter hit a two-out triple in the first

- Rusher scored him on an RBI double to right field

- Tusculum answered with Ben Scartz's RBI single with no outs

- The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead on an RBI groundout

 

FIFTH INNING

- Perrell's two-RBI single with one away swung the advantage to Catawba's favor in the fifth

 

SIXTH INNING

- Scartz's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth tied the game

 

SEVENTH INNING

- Perrell ripped a go-ahead, two-out double to re-take the lead

- Tusculum re-gained the lead with two runs on a throwing error

 

EIGHTH INNING

- The Pioneers added an insurance score on a bases-loaded walk

 

NINTH INNING

- Catawba got the tying run aboard, but TU stranded it with a strikeout

- Catawba turns around quickly, facing Newberry at Newman Park tomorrow in non-conference action at 3 p.m.
