Baseball extends win streak to seven with sweep of Limestone

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College baseball team extended their win streak to seven games and nine of their last 10 following a doubleheader sweep of Limestone at Newman Park to move atop the South Atlantic Conference standings at 9-3 in league play and 19-6 overall.

 

GAME ONE | Catawba 11, Limestone 2

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Limestone 12-4

- The Catawba Indians had six of seven extra-base hits; both teams hit a homer

- The Saints committed each of the three errors in the contest

- Catawba had the lone stolen base of game one

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Payne Stolsworth pitched a complete game, tossing nine innings, while allowing two runs on four hits, striking out eight

- Sam Hunter was 2-for-4 with a double, a steal, two RBI and two runs scored

- Bo Rusher homered for the third time this week, driving in three runs

- Dylan Driver triple, drove in a run and scored twice

- Cole Hales went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Limestone's Winston Parke homered on the first pitch of the game to take an early lead

 

SECOND INNING

- Cooper Bryson's double put runners on second and third with one out

- Logan Rogers drove in the runner from third before Ty Hubbard's RBI sac bunt put Catawba on top 2-1

 

THIRD INNING

- Rusher belted a two-run homer to right to push the lead to 4-1

- Two singles and a throwing error allowed Hales to score on Bryson's RBI groundout

 

FOURTH INNING

- Hunter's RBI double down the right field line scored Driver

- Rusher's drove in another on a single for a 7-1 Catawba advantage

 

FIFTH INNING

- Josh Shuler's two-out RBI single stopped the scoring run for Catawba to make it 7-2

 

SIXTH INNING

- Driver led the sixth inning off with a triple to right center

- Hunter drove him in on an RBI groundout

 

SEVENTH INNING

- Catawba added another score in the seventh on Driver's RBI hit-by-pitch

 

EIGHTH INNING

- Hales double set up Parker Styborski's RBI sac fly

- Patrick Hogan ripped off an RBI double to left center for the final score of game one

TEAM STATISTICS

- Limestone out-hit Catawba 7-6

- The Saints had two of three extra-base hits in the game with Catawba recording the lone homer

- Limestone committed two of three errors in the game

- The Saints had five of seven stolen bases in game two

- Catawba's pitchers allowed three earned runs on seven hits and five walks, striking out seven; Limestone's staff allowed six earned runs on six hits and six walks, striking out six

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Rogers hit an opposite-field grand slam

- Drew Robertson singled, drove in a run and scored twice

- Hunter recorded yet another multi-hit game

- Casey Gouge earned the win on the mound, tossing two shutout innings in relief, while striking out four; Hales picked up his third save on the season in the ninth

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Robertson walked for Catawba's third straight to drive in a run

- Rogers emptied the bases with an opposite-field grand slam to kick open a 5-0 lead

 

SECOND INNING

- Rusher's RBI single to left scored Driver to take a commanding 6-0 lead

 

THIRD INNING

- Limestone got one back in the third on Davis Turner's sac fly

- Catawba answered when Robertston raced around third and scored after Hubbard beat out a potential double play

 

FOURTH INNING

- Limestone struck for three runs in the fourth on Wyatt Stone's RBI base hit and two runners scoring on a throwing error

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba hits the road for their first game against a ranked opponent this season, looking to take the season sweep of 18th-ranked Mount Olive on Tuesday; first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
