Simons named WePlayed Sports SAC DPOW

Rock Hill, S.C. —- Catawba College senior Evan Simons was named WePlayed Sports South Atlantic Conference Football Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Simons racked up 12 tackles with three going for a loss with two sacks and an interception in the Catawba Indians' 42-28 win over Mars Hill for the team's fourth straight win on Saturday.

The Chesapeake, Va. native intercepted Mars Hill quarterback JR Martin and returned it 23 yards into the Lions' red zone to set up Catawba's opening touchdown of the game.

Simons ranks second in the SAC with four sacks this season, seventh in the league with 42 tackles and is one of just five players in the SAC with a forced fumble and an interception this season.

Catawba won its fourth straight game in the win over Mars Hill, improving its record through six games to 5-1, which includes wins in all four home games to this point.

Simons and the Catawba Indians look to continue the streak on the road on Saturday, traveling to Wingate to face the reigning SAC champion Bulldogs at 6 p.m.
