#8 Women’s Soccer holds on for key win in SAC race at Wingate

Wingate, N.C. —- The 8th-ranked Catawba College women's soccer team held off the Wingate Bulldogs on the road, vaulting up to alone in first place of the South Atlantic Conference standings on Wednesday night.

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-shot Wingate 17-12

- The Catawba Indians put nine shots on goal to the Bulldogs' three

- WU had seven of 10 corner kicks

- Both teams were called for 10 fouls

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Ella Matthews scored and put a team-best four shots on goal

- Kylie Morin hit paydirt on a free kick

- Reese Robinson recorded the game-winner in the second half

- Jenni Dähne made a save in goal in the winning decision

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST HALF

- Matthews' first two shots on goal were saved, but the third found the back of the net for the first score of the night in the fourth minute

- A shot from Bree Ehmer hit the right post for a chance to extend the lead

- Wingate's Avery Brown scored the equalizer on a great hit from the right side to even up the score at 1 apiece

- Ehmer drew a free kick close to the top of the box and Morin did the rest, finding the upper corner for the score, sending Catawba up 2-1 at the halftime break

SECOND HALF

- Robinson scored off of a corner kick for what turned out to be much-needed insurance

- With the Bulldogs trailing, Catawba turned away an aggressive Wingate offense until Audur Halldorsdottir closed the deficit to a single score with a goal with less than 50 seconds remaining

- Catawba looks to maintain its lead in the SAC on Saturday when it hosts Tusculum at Frock Field for a 7:30 p.m. start
