PREVIEW: Women's Lacrosse preps for midweek clash at SWU

CENTRAL, S.C. – The Catawba College women's lacrosse team takes off to Southern Wesleyan for a non-conference matchup with the Warriors on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

 

Last Time Out

- Catawba paid a visit to then-No. 25 Belmont Abbey last Tuesday, a day before previously scheduled due to forecasted snow, and suffered a 22-6 setback

- Skylar Mullin contributed to half of the Catawba Indians' scoring, netting her first career goal with two assists

- Abby Shuren recorded a two-goal brace as Joey Baillie, Ella McCusker and Grace Virginia Deal also found the back of the net

- Shuren and Meredith Marchetti notched three ground balls apiece, while Mullin and Shuren each tacked on a pair of caused turnovers in the defensive effort

- The teams finished at an even 15-15 in draw controls with Catawba being led by Audrey Adelsberger and Kylie Harris at three each

- The blue and white are led offensively by Shuren's six goals as well as Deal's five scores and an assist

- Marchetti tops the ground balls category with five pickups followed by Mullin's four; a trio of Catawba Indians have three

- Harris paces the team with eight draw controls as Adelsberger has notched five

- Mullin, Shuren and Marchetti have caused two turnovers apiece

- Rookie Ava Kunza has spent both matchups in the crease, logging a 14.89 goals-against average and a .356 save percentage with 16 total stops

 

Barnstorming the Carolinas

- Wednesday marks the end of Catawba's three-game tour on the road against Conference Carolinas opponents

- In the league's preseason poll, Belmont Abbey was slotted in the runner-up position while Shorter and Southern Wesleyan landed in the second half of the field at eighth and 10th, respectively

- The Catawba Indians will have played in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia to start the season, covering over 1,100 miles up and down the Interstate 85 corridor

 

All-Time Series

- Catawba met Southern Wesleyan for the first and only time in program history on Feb. 12, 2022, taking a 10-3 victory at Shuford Stadium

- Five current Catawba Indians appeared in the contest including Ella McCusker who netted two goals with three ground ball pickups

 

Scouting the Warriors

- Southern Wesleyan comes into the matchup with a 1-4 ledger and is currently on a four-game skid

- SWU was clipped by Coker, 13-12, on Saturday in heartbreaking fashion after the Cobras outscored the Warriors 7-2 in the fourth quarter

- Four of the Warriors' five opponents have been South Atlantic Conference members, going 1-3 against the league with the lone victory coming in the season opener against Emory & Henry in 11-9 fashion

- Ella McCowen and Rinna Beth Brooker pace SWU with eight goals apiece, combining for half of the team's scoring

- Fianna Steves, named the department's Mug Shot Coffee Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, is the Warriors' top defensive weapon with 27 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers
