SALISBURY, N.C. – Coming off a home victory over Winston-Salem State earlier in the week, the Catawba College women's volleyball team faces another CIAA squad in Shaw on Friday at 6 p.m. inside Goodman Arena.
Aces Were Wild
- The Catawba Indians dealt 12 aces in the 3-1 home opener win over Winston-Salem State on Tuesday evening, setting the program's highest mark since 2022
- Riley Hill topped the lineup with four service strikes while Sofia Beard, Lillie Kate Rogers and Haley Moffett also recorded multiple aces
- Rogers fired a team-high 16 kills and fell one dig short of a double-double
- Both of Catawba's setters crossed the 20-assist barrier, led by Tamie Boudot's career-high 25 dimes
Hill Climbing
- Four matches into her junior season, Riley Hill has already jumped two spots on the career digs list (in the rally scoring to 25 era) to currently stand seventh at 888
- Her 24 digs on Tuesday helped the Salisbury native slip past Jordan Raye (2009-12, 872)
- Recent alumna and fellow hometown kid Kary Hales holds the next-highest position on the list in the 1K club with 1,020 digs from 2021-24
Leading the Way
- Rogers leads the offensive attack with 46 kills as Beard follows at 42 blasts
- Martina Foster is hitting a team-best .328 with 30 kills in the middle
- Moffett and Boudot have shouldered a nearly even load, recording 78 and 70 assists, respectively
- Hill naturally paces Catawba in digs at the libero slot with 70 and shares the top aces value of six with Moffett
- Foster, Sydney Wattles and Annica Kagle are tied in blocking at eight denials apiece
All-Time Series
- Catawba has the upper hand by a 6-1 margin in the all-time series
- The Catawba Indians fell victim to a 3-0 sweep by the Bears in a season-opening tournament that Shaw hosted last season, halting a six-match winning streak for Catawba
- The lone match held in Salisbury occurred on Oct. 21, 1995, resulting in a 3-0 blanking for the home team
Scouting the Bears
- Shaw comes to The 'Bury with a 1-1 record, suffering a 3-0 defeat in its last time out at Lenoir-Rhyne
- The Bears rolled over Sweet Briar in their season opener last Saturday, outscoring the Division III Vixens 75-17
- The program's 29 aces against the Vixens vaulted it to the No. 1 spot in national rankings for aces per set and its .610 hitting percentage from the match keeps the Bears ranked 52nd at .237
- Makayla Brown and Asia Olivera pace the Bear offense with double-figure kills, delivering 12 and 11 strikes, respectively
