Wingate, N.C. — The Catawba College women's basketball team hit a season-high 13 three-pointers in a midday game at Wingate in South Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday, but fell on a late-game layup in the closing seconds.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Catawba shot 23-for-58 (40 percent) from the field, while Wingate went 26-of-71 (37 percent) from the field
- The Catawba Indians made a season-high 13 three-pointers on 30 attempts (43 percent); the Bulldogs went 5-for-21 (24 percent) from long range
- WU was 4-for-8 (50 percent) from the free throw line, while Catawba did not record a made free throw on five attempts
- Wingate out-rebounded Catawba 51-35; their 22 offensive rebounds helped them gain a 12-5 advantage in second-chance points
- The Bulldogs recorded 19 assists to 17 turnovers, while the Catawba Indians had 15 assists to 20 turnovers; Wingate held a 20-9 edge in points off turnovers
- Wingate led in points in the paint (34-20), fastbreak points (8-6) and bench points (18-15)
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Saniya Wilson logged a season-high 17 points on a career-high five three pointers
- Brooklin Ingram added 14 points with four triples made
- Julie Janus was the third Catawba Indian in double figures with 11 points on three three-pointers made
- Mary Spry chipped in six points and four rebounds
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Wingate opened the game with the first six points
- Ingram and Imani Williams scored to pull within a score near the midway point of the period
- The Bulldogs went up 12-6 at the 2:19 mark, but Catawba went on a 7-0 run to lead 13-12
SECOND QUARTER
- The Catawba Indians extended the run to 15 unanswered points to take a 21-12 lead a little more than a minute into the second
- Wilson's three-pointer pushed the lead to 11 points at the 4:47 mark
- A quick five points helped Wingate get back into the game, they scored a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the halftime deficit to 30-25
THIRD QUARTER
- The Bulldogs opened the second half on a 16-3 run to take an 8-point lead near the midway point of the third quarter
- Wingate led 47-38 at the end of the third quarter, out-scoring Catawba 22-8 in the quarter
FOURTH QUARTER
- Three-pointers from Makayla Stokes and two from Wilson flipped an 8-point deficit to a one-point Catawba field with 3:34 to play
- Wingate scored to retake the lead before Ingram's triple put the Catawba Indians back in front
- The Bulldogs' Kyleigh Bacon tied the game with a basket at the 2:20 mark
- Neither team scored before Wingate scored the game-winner with five seconds left on a layup
- Wilson hoisted a potential game-winner from over 35 feet, but the shot missed
