Salisbury, N.C. — The Catawba College women's basketball team snapped its five-game skid with a win over Tusculum in Goodman Arena over its annual Play4Kay game to drive awareness and funds for all cancers affecting women.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Tusculum shot 17-for-49 (35 percent), while Catawba was 22-of-71 (31 percent) from the floor
- The Pioneers shot 9-for-21 (43 percent) from three-point range; the Catawba Indians were 8-of-29 (28 percent) from deep
- TU was 13-for-16 (81 percent) at the free throw line, while Catawba shot 12-of-16 (75 percent) at the charity stripe
- The Catawba Indians out-rebounded Tusculum 46-39; Catawba's 16 offensive rebounds help them out-score the Pioneers 13-2 in second chance
- Catawba recorded 13 points to eight turnovers compared to the Pioneers' 12 assists to 20 turnovers; the Catawba Indians out-scored TU 24-7 in points off turnovers
- Catawba out-scored Tusculum 24-14 in points in the paint, and 16-11 in bench points
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Brooklin Ingram turned in a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds with five three-pointers
- Mary Spry matched her with 18 points of her own, going 8-for-8 from the free throw line
- Imani Williams dished out a team-leading five assists
- Saniya Wilson recorded six points, five rebounds and three assists
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- The teams remained within a possession of each other for the entire first quarter
- Makayla Stokes' late jumper gave Catawba an 18-16 lead after 10 minutes
SECOND QUARTER
- Ingram's three-pointer pushed Catawba's lead to seven points early in the second
- Tusculum responded with five straight points of its own to get within a bucket
- Aisha Patel's three-pointer put the Pioneers on top at the 1:04 mark
- TU led 31-29 at the halftime break
THIRD QUARTER
- A pair of triples from Ingram and one from Williams helped Catawba to an 11-0 run to start the second half for Catawba
- Patel buried another three-pointer to cut the Pioneers' deficit to five with three minutes to play in the third
- Two baskets from Spry helped Catawba keep its mid-range lead, up 46-38 after three quarters
FOURTH QUARTER
- Ingram's three-pointer and solid 2-for-2 trips from the Spry helped Catawba push a six-point lead to a 13-point lead midway through the fourth
- The Pioneers scored eight unanswered to get within five points with 76 seconds remaining
- Catawba went 6-for-6 from the line down the stretch, holding off the Pioneers for the SAC win
