ROCK HILL, S.C. — The Catawba College men's lacrosse program was well represented in the South Atlantic Conference postseason awards release on Tuesday, earning three all-conference honorees with Statton Rehrer being named the Freshman of the Year.
Rehrer, an attacking midfielder from Mooresville, N.C., supplied 32 points on 21 goals and 11 assists while appearing in all 15 games. The rookie was a valuable part of the Catawba man-up offense, finding the back of the net five times on the power play. Defensively, Rehrer tallied two caused turnovers and three ground balls. He is the program's first SAC major award winner and third conference Freshman of the Year, joining Tony Fescina (1997) and Tom Cullop (2010) who were honored during the Deep South Conference era.
Sophomore defenseman Owen Conway secured a Second Team All-SAC placement, while junior attackman Tanner Stout and junior short-stick defensive midfielder Kier McKnight each collected spots on the Third Team.
Conway elevated the Catawba defense this season with 25 caused turnovers and 35 ground balls in 11 contests, both top-10 marks among SAC defensemen despite missing the final four games due to injury. The Bel Air, Md., product tallied two SAC Defensive Player of the Week awards and seven games with multiple takeaways and ground ball pickups; he recorded a season-high five caused turnovers on three separate occasions.
Stout recorded one of the finest offensive campaigns in program history, sending in 50 goals and 12 assists for 62 points with two SAC Player of the Week accolades. At the completion of Catawba's season, he ranked second in scoring league-wide with his goal production slotting second in the Catawba record book. The Elon, N.C., native went on a streak of five games with five or more goals during the conference slate, highlighted by a 10-point affair against Mars Hill.
McKnight hit his stride late in the year, tearing through SAC competition with strong defensive marks and a goal against three of the four teams in the tournament's semifinal round. The Mooresville, N.C., product finished second on the squad with nine caused turnovers while adding 16 ground ball pickups. He registered a caused turnover in four of the last five outings, including back-to-back two-takeaway games against Wingate and Anderson.
