GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The 20th-ranked Catawba College men's lacrosse team competes in its first out-of-state contest on Saturday, visiting Tusculum for the South Atlantic Conference opener at 4 p.m.
Another Week, Another Win
- Catawba made quick work of Barton last Saturday in a 13-2 rout to remain undefeated through four games
- Frank Cetrone and Tanner Stout powered the offense with three goals apiece and combined for nine points
- Cael Petroff went 11-for-17 (.647) on faceoffs and collected five ground balls
- Jack Butler secured four ground ball pickups, lifting his season total to 14
- Brady Gauntner starred in the crease with 12 stops on an .857 save percentage, notching the team's best mark since 2017
Best Start in Program History
- With four consecutive wins to start the year, Catawba is enjoying its best start of the Mike Murphy era and continues to match the program's best-ever start
- The Catawba record for the longest undefeated streak was set in 2012 when the squad started 6-0; the Catawba Indians finished 14-3 and took home the second of three straight Deep South Conference Tournament titles
Ranked No. 20
- The Catawba Indians were tabbed No. 20 in Monday's USILA Coaches' Poll, marking the program's first national ranking since 2021
- Receiving votes after beating Chowan and Mount Olive, the blue and white knocked off two other vote receivers in Belmont Abbey and Barton to strengthen their resume and make a debut in the national poll
- The South Atlantic Conference is well-represented in the USILA standings with five members in the Top 20; Lenoir-Rhyne, Limestone and Wingate are 3-4-5 as Newberry sits one spot ahead of Catawba at No. 19
All-Time Series
- The series between Catawba and Tusculum is basically even, but the blue and white lead by a nose at 5-4
- In the three games hosted by Tusculum, the Pioneers are 2-1 with the lone loss coming on Apr. 1, 2023 when Catawba squeaked out a 10-9 triumph
- Catawba is enjoying a three-game streak of victories against Tusculum as the Pioneers seek their first win in the series since prevailing 11-10 in the second overtime on Senior Day in 2019
Scouting the Pioneers
- Tusculum enters the SAC clash with a 2-2 non-conference ledger, taking down Chowan 19-10 in a midweek tilt at Pioneer Field for the program's home opener
- Although Tusculum has netted double-digit goals in each of their its contests, the defense has also allowed 10 or more goals on every occasion
- The Pioneers have been efficient with their shots, putting up a .417 success rate that ranks third in the country
- TU is being led on offense by Tysen Fontenla and Clay Mendez with 11 and 10 goals, respectively, as Luke Bowen is the points leader at 15 tallies including 10 assists
- Sophomores Jesse Brown and Blake Harrison pace the Pioneers with seven caused turnovers apiece on the defensive end
