Tempe, Ariz. —- Catawba College freshman Agustin Mastri and junior Ami Miya earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II Southeast Region Rookie of the Year and Player to Watch, respectively, the organization announced Monday.
Mastri, a native of Venado Tuerto, Argentina, earned burst onto the scene in his first season at Catawba, earning South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year honors in his first season in the league. He led Catawba to its first SAC regular season title in program history and its first SAC Tournament title and NCAA Tournament years in 18 and 29 years, respectively.
Catawba reached its highest ITA national ranking in program history earlier this season at eighth, while riding a 14-match win streak into the NCAA Tournament Second Round, where it fell to nationally ranked North Georgia.
Miya, a junior from Yokohama, Japan, added her third All-SAC season to her successful career with a 14-0 mark in singles play to lead the Catawba Indians to their most successful season in program history.
She helped lead Catawba to its first regular season SAC title in program history and a win in each of its first 24 matches to begin the season, at one point the longest active win unbeaten streak of any college program in the country.
Miya added First Team All-SAC honors for the second straight year while adding First Team All-SAC accolades in doubles play with partner Lili Drukerova.
