PREVIEW: Football hits the road to face Newberry

Newberry, S.C. — The Catawba College football team looks to build upon its win last week when it travels to Newberry to continue South Atlantic Conference play at Setzler Field Saturday night.

- Catawba's starting quarterback Preston Brown shined in Saturday's win over UVA Wise, going 25-for-29 for 372 passing yards with three touchdowns through the air with two more scores on the ground
- The performance earned him WePlayed Sports SAC Football Offensive Player of the Week
- The Catawba Indian leader ranks third nationally in completion percentage, third in yards per pass attempt, fifth in passing efficiency and eighth in passing touchdowns
 
PLAYING CLEAN
- Catawba has played clean football so far in 2025, a hallmark of Catawba teams under Tyler Haines
- The Catawba Indians rank top ten in the country with just four penalties against them per game through three weeks
- When Catawba is flagged, however, it is for an average of nearly 10 yards per penalty, causing their penalty yards per game to climb to 39 yards per game (24th nationally)
 
FACING ANOTHER TOP RB
- Catawba faced the league's top running back through three weeks in UVA Wise's Daniel Thomas (151.3 yards per game), where he rushed for 256 yards on Saturday
- The Catawba Indians are tasked with another of the league's top backs in Newberry's Dwayne Wright, who has ranked in the top five in rushing in the SAC in both of the last two seasons
- With 94 rush yards on Saturday, Wright would eclipse 2,000 career rushing yards
 
SCOUTING THE WOLVES
- Newberry topped UVA Wise 31-24 on the road in its season opener and lone SAC test to date in a downpour
- The Wolves blanked Point University 49-0 in its home opener last week
- Newberry is the only team in the SAC to complete its passes at a higher percentage than Catawba; the Wolves lead the country with nearly 85 percent of its passes completed through two games
- Catawba's pass defense has ranked in the top 25 in the country in yardage, but is looking for its first interception of 2025

- Catawba returns home to Shuford Stadium next Saturday, hosting Southern Connecticut State in a break from SAC action; kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
