PREVIEW: Football opens SAC slate on the road with Emory & Henry

Emory, Va. — The Catawba College football team kicks off its South Atlantic Conference schedule on the road on Saturday, traveling north to face Emory & Henry at 1 p.m.

DEFENSIVE STOPPER

Evan Simons earned the SAC's opening Defensive Player of the Week honor in Catawba's Week 0 win over Ferrum

- The Chesapeake, Va. native racked up nine tackles, four coming for a loss, with a sack and a forced fumble

- The Catawba Indians held the Panthers to less than 250 yards of total offense and their lone touchdown came on a fumble recovery in the end zone

TWO-HEADED BACKFIELD

- Catawba featured a backfield split evenly down the middle with Kevin Lalin and Bennett Galloway each taking 15 carries in the season opener

- The two combined for over 220 yards from scrimmage with three touchdowns to power the potent Catawba offense

- Three other Catawba running backs added over 90 yards on 15 carries, an average of over five yards per tote

RIGHT ON THE MONEY

- Quarterback Preston Brown completed all 11 of his pass attempts in the season-opening win over Ferrum for 202 yards and three touchdowns

- Brown matched his program-record of consecutive completions in a game, which he also accomplished in the win at Shaw a season ago

- The Charlotte native has completed nearly 75 percent of his passes with 13 touchdown passes to just two interceptions since the start of the 2024 season

SCOUTING THE WASPS

- Catawba and Emory & Henry did not meet in the 2024 season, where the Wasps enjoyed a successful 9-2 season with key nationally ranked wins over Lenoir-Rhyne and Carson-Newman

- The Wasps just missed out on the SAC Championship game and an NCAA play-off berth

- E&H got on the right foot this past Saturday, rolling to a 45-17 win over Glenville State behind senior running back Jordan Jackson, who rushed for 226 yards and a touchdown, earning him SAC Offensive Player of the Week
