Matthew Connolly was named the WePlayed Sports South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday morning.
The Salisbury native hit .500 across four wins for the 11th-ranked Catawba Indians, racking up eight hits, including a double and a homer, with eight RBI and four runs scored.
The second-year backstop for Catawba piled up multiple hits in each of his first three games of the week with a big game in the midweek win over Barton, hitting a homer in one of his three hits on the game with four RBI and three runs scored. He followed it up with a three-hit game in the win in the opener over Tusculum with a three-RBI game in the first game on Saturday.
Connolly also helped a Catawba pitching staff navigate 34 innings this week with just five runs allowed. The staff currently ranks sixth nationally in earned run average.
The Catawba Indians head to Belmont Abbey on Tuesday for a matchup of the two Southeast Regional hosts from a season ago. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
