#10 Women’s Swimming leads SAC Championships after Day One

Kingsport, Tenn. — The 10th-ranked Catawba College women's swimming team saw two of its student-athletes earn individual titles on Day One of the South Atlantic Conference Women's Swimming Championships at the Kingsport (Tenn.) Aquatic Center on Wednesday, leading the conference meet after the opening day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

PRELIMINARIES

50-Yard Freestyle

- Freshman Clara Campo de Paoli set an NCAA B-cut mark in the 50 Free prelims with a time of 23.49 seconds

FINALS

1,000-Yard Freestyle

- Fiona Byrne successfully completed the three-peat in the Women's 1000 Free, winning the SAC title in the event in each of her three collegiate seasons

- She paced the field by nearly four seconds, touching the wall in 10:09.26

- Danielle Meinema and Ella Gutenwik rounded out an all-Catawba top three in the event both reaching NCAA A-cut marks of 10:13.23 and 10:19.81, respectively

- Rebecca Possenti earned a spot in the championship heat, placing eighth

200-Yard Individual Medley

- Freshman Fernanda Regina was the top Catawba finisher in the 200 IM, placing fifth in the SAC championship meet with a mark of 2:06.82

- Gabi Moll also qualified for the championship heat, placing seventh with a mark of 2:08.28

50-Yard Freestyle

- Marit Reckmann also completed a title defense when she won the SAC title in the Women's 50 Free, besting out the nearest Wingate competitor by 0.14 seconds

- Eniko Onofer and Campo de Paoli finished neck-and-neck at third and fourth, respectively, with B-cut -worthy times of 23.37 and 23.60

- Sydney Peterson punched her ticket to the championship final, placing eighth

200-Yard Medley Relay

- Catawba's 200 Medley relay team of Onofer, Sydney McKenzie, Peterson and Reckmann finished in a close second for the SAC title, finishing less than four-tenths of a second behind the winning relay team with a time of 1:41.56

- Catawba returns to the pool on Thursday for Day Two, with the 100 Butterfly, 400 IM, 200 Free and 400 Medley Relay on deck
